With a new year, comes new hope. I'll be donating 25% of each Sweet New Year Card Set to support life saving Nemaline Rod Myopathy (Type 2) research at Sick Kids. It is an ultra rare neuromuscular condition that disproportionately affects Ashkenazi Jews. It impacts all of the affected person's muscles (including the muscles needed for breathing and eating). Even a cold can be life threatening. Most kids with this condition don't make it past 2 years of age. Dr. James Dowling has dedicated nearly his entire career to finding a cure for NM. The personalized genetic therapies he is developing are not only expected to reverse symptoms of NM but are also expected to treat possibly hundreds of other genetic disorders for which there are currently no available treatments. This is huge! At this time, the only thing holding Dr. Dowling back from completing the research is funding.
I became aware of NM through my friend Toba Cooper who has a 3-year-old son named Ethan with the condition. He's a warrior. Toba, together with her family, has tirelessly been fundraising and advocating for Ethan's health and future. Toba's mom, Ethel Cooper z"l, was my high school art teacher. Her love of Yiddishkeit (she was the Yiddish teacher too!) shone through in every class and was a huge influence on my love of art and Jewish life... fast forward to Everyday Yiddish.
